Back in December, we were having breakfast at Café Americano at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas, minding our own business. Well, that soon changed, because halfway through our breakfast, I looked to my right, past a mirror and through some plants, and sitting about thirty to forty feet away (?) was someone bearing a strong resemblance to Matt LeBlanc (Joey Tribbiani from Friends)!! Yep, he looked exactly like him, but I had to keep glancing in his direction to confirm my hopeful suspicions.
After catching glimpses here and there for the next ten minutes or so (I don’t remember, was I done with my breakfast? What was I even eating? And was it any good?), I was one hundred percent positive it was him…and that’s when I broke into full “stalker” mode and took these pics of him (and his mirrored reflection), except a server station was directly in my line of sight!!! 😠 So I held the camera steady, ready to snap the photos as soon as those pesky servers moved out of my way, each time, for each one of these shots! (I realize they had a job to do, but so did I…I was a woman on a mission.) It’s actually pretty hilarious if you think about it. But at the time, I wasn’t laughing.
He went outside with his peeps for a smoke break (maybe to get away from that creepy lady snapping pictures with her smartphone like a lunatic 😆). I thought they were leaving and was willing to go outside and inhale those disgusting fumes of death just to meet him, but then they came in and sat back down. (I think I breathed a sigh of relief so strong it could have been felt in Southern California and mistaken for the Santa Anas. 🌬) I said to my husband how much I would LOVE to meet him and get a picture with him, which he was completely against me doing (no big surprise there), but, of course, the stubborn Italian in me wasn’t backing down anytime soon! He wanted to avoid embarrassment because he wasn’t convinced it was really Matt…but I was!
Thinking I wouldn’t have an opportunity, we got up to leave, but I hadn’t noticed they got up and walked out a couple seconds before us. Ooh, my mind – and heart – were racing!! When the maître d’ shook Matt’s hand, that’s what finally convinced my husband, and he said, “Yep, that’s him.” (Duh, I already knew that…try to keep up, hun. 🙄) So, we proceeded to follow them down a hallway in the opposite direction of where we were going (why, of course!), hoping to catch up and not sure how I’d approach him. He and his “entourage” were only about ten feet in front of us…or maybe it was fifteen. (I really need to start bringing a tape measure with me on vacation. 🤣)
We got to a break in the hallway where they turned left at a group of elevators, so they had nowhere to go!! I stood in watch for a few secs and thought, this is my chance, just do it!! So, I casually approached him – hands shaking and palms sweaty – and said the words I never dreamt I’d say (forgetting my exact words due to my overwhelming excitement), “Excuse me, but aren’t you Matt LeBlanc?” And he said, “Yes, I am.”
AAAHHHHHH!!!!!! (It was obviously him, but I just wanted to hear his confirmation.) My heart fluttered, and I think my knees got weak. I proceeded to tell him how huge a fan of his I am and that I loved him in Friends. (See his hilarious new sitcom, Man With A Plan, Monday nights on CBS!) He graciously thanked me and asked me my name (which, incredibly, I remembered) and where I’m from. In my nervous excitement (or disbelief, I’m not sure which), I started rattling off all the states we’ve lived in, where we currently live, and where I’m originally from. I asked if he was enjoying his stay, and he said he was there for a short visit, and I said we were too. (Although I wouldn’t have blamed him if he tried to catch the next flight out to avoid encountering any rabid fans. 😜)
I think a few more words were exchanged before an elevator door opened, and they were getting inside. As Matt got in, I knew I’d have to act fast or I’d lose the opportunity and regret it for the rest of my life, so I asked if he’d mind having a picture taken with me. He said, in his Joey voice, “Sure, come on in.” As in, “in the elevator”!!! 😄 I thought that was a little strange. But he stepped out for the pic after I said I wanted my husband to be in it too. Wouldn’t you know, the one time on our entire trip I decided to go slumming to breakfast wearing a friggin’ sweatshirt and yoga pants, when I was dressed much nicer the rest of the time! Ugh. It figures. But at least my hair looked halfway decent…I had that going for me. 😒
Mind you, the whole entire time, my husband was waiting (hiding) around the corner in embarrassment and didn’t hear ANY of our conversation (of course he didn’t!!), so I yelled, “Hun!!!” He came rushing around the corner, and I prepped him on what was happening. As I fumbled to retrieve my phone from my purse, with Matt standing just inches away from me, I clearly remember saying to him, “My hands are shaking.” What a bumbling idiot! I intended for hubby to get in the photo with us, but he took my phone, telling Matt he was a huge fan too but that it was my moment, so he took a picture…actually two. As we got ready to part ways, Matt shook each of our hands, and I said, “Enjoy the rest of your trip.”
Surprisingly, I remained coherent and articulate the whole time. He was incredibly gracious, friendly, and so down to earth! It was like talking to an old friend. I was a huge fan of his before this encounter, but now, I’m a much bigger fan! Without a doubt, one of the highlights of my entire life. Couldn’t stop smiling from ear to ear afterward. Still in awe with how everything aligned and worked out. God was definitely with us (as He always is).
I realize this is a very long post (it’s the writer in me), so congratulations if you’ve made it all the way through! 👏
