Two Saturdays ago, we made a delightful discovery that became ingrained in our memories. I’m referring to Currahee Vineyard & Winery located in Toccoa, Georgia, except this is no ordinary vineyard. Currahee Vineyard & Winery is a very special family-owned farm and vineyard that has produced award-winning wines and is run by some of the most hospitable and gracious people to ever walk the planet!
The Currahee family farm is situated at the base of beautiful Currahee Mountain, the southernmost mountain in the Blue Ridge chain.
In celebration of the Fourth of July holiday, the staff at Currahee set up their patio beautifully with the utmost care and attention. No detail was overlooked.
We had the extreme pleasure of meeting Marvin Dunson, owner and winemaker. That’s him pictured below on the left (I don’t know who that other guy is…just kidding, he’s my hubby 😄).
After speaking to Marvin briefly on the phone and in person, it’s easy to see why all of the glowing reviews were written about him; he is one of the most genuine, kindhearted souls we’ve ever had the privilege of meeting! There really aren’t enough good things to say.
That’s Tom, Marvin’s brother-in-law, behind the tasting bar above. Also one of the most pleasant and affable people we’ve ever met! We conversed with Tom throughout the entire tasting experience and shared stories as if we were old friends. He’s quite a character with a great sense of humor. Succeeding the tasting, we bought some bottles of peach wine and apple wine to bring home. So refreshingly delicious!
Thanks to my contact with Dale Thornton, owner of South 40 Smokehouse whom we had encountered at a recent festival, he informed us that his food truck would be at Currahee Vineyard on Saturday, July 1. Since we had thoroughly enjoyed their food so much and were excited to visit a different vineyard, we “followed” the truck to Toccoa, GA for more of their mouthwatering, lip-smacking “southern fare with flair” (I just now came up with that! 🙌).
That’s Dale, meticulously preparing the quality smoked meats for the day’s impending onslaught of people. Dale has a very personable nature about him, and you can tell he is passionate about what he does and loves pleasing others. I admire that in a person.
A meal with a view is my favorite way to dine! And I can’t think of anything better to accompany that gorgeous scenery than more of Dale’s insanely delicious pulled chicken and sides that I would drive one hundred miles for (and almost did!). But thankfully, we don’t have to since they’re never too far away. “Don’t you worry, Dale Thornton, I will track you down!” 🙂
We purposely arrived early before the crowds and were the first ones served, which was awesome!
Another glorious, unforgettable day was spent indulging in exceptional wine and sensational food, making new friends, and marveling at the beauty of the north Georgia mountains. Thank you to everyone at Currahee Vineyard & Winery and South 40 Smokehouse who made us feel most welcome and helped create memories to last a lifetime!
P.S. If you live near Toccoa or are traveling through the area, do yourself a favor and plan a visit to this extraordinary vineyard…you’ll be glad you did!
